Here’s this week’s round up of the week’s best new and independent music. A feast of great music this time round.
Other Voices 06, Cavern of Anti-Matter (Ghost Box)
Two special recordings, for Ghost Box’s equal special Other Voices series, from Tim Gane’s low key, elusive and damned near perfect Berlin based band Cavern of Anti- Matter. “Pulsing River Velvet Phase” is a beautifully evolving melodic piece for guitar and synths. Reminiscent of Gane’s Stereolab work, it’s a five minute epic that blossoms organically as it joyfully shifts mood and time signatures. On “Phototones” Cavern of Anti-Matter are in more typical motorik territory. A delightfully upbeat head-nodder.
Other Voices 07, ToiToiToi (Ghost Box)
Two witty, electronic diversions featuring plasticine synthesizers, spectral voices of origin, and haphazard percussion (likely to appeal to fans of Roj).
The Land and the Garden, Vic Mars (Clay Pipe Music)
From Clay Pipe Music:
“Vic Mars is a Herefordshire born musician currently based in London, having returned from spending over a decade in Nagoya, Japan.
In 2013, whilst still based in Japan but on a visit home, Vic was stuck by the reprints of vintage British Railway posters hanging in his brothers house.
Back in Japan, homesick and inspired by his childhood memories of the Herefordshire landscape he started the initial recordings for The Land and the Garden, carefully piecing together string and Mellotron soundscapes using archaic tracker software, and recording direct to cassette tape.
During this time he immersed himself in the music of British classical composers such as Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, the minimalist work of Wim Mertens and 1970’s children’s BBC soundtracks such as those by Freddie Phillips, and Vernon Elliot.”
We can confirm the result is another thoroughly lovely release from a thoroughly lovely label.
Radioland: Radio-Activity Revisited, Franck Vigroux & Matthew Bourne (The Leaf Label)
This is a unique, very special collaboration between Franck Vigroux, the composer and sound artist and Perrier Jazz award-winning pianist and composer Matthew Bourne. Earlier in 2015, they reimagined Kraftwerk’s 1975 masterpiece Radio-Activity live, with installation artist Antoine Schmitt, on the 40th anniversary of the release, using a formidable barrage of analogue equipment and live visual imagery. Released now on the ever-wonderful Leaf Label.
Martes + Utopía Murcof (The Leaf Label)
The 2002 masterpiece Martes reissued as part of Leaf’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Martes has been resequenced with the original tracks from the subsequent album Utopía, plus three rarities from the Martes era, all with new, updated artwork.
Christmas II, Sunburns (Fika Recordings)
SUNTURNS are a Norwegian super-group devoted to Christmas, featuring members of Making Marks, Moddi, The Little Hands Of Asphalt, Monzano and Einar Stray Orchestra. You may have guessed that Christmas II is their second Christmas album.
It features 10 original Christmas songs, inspired by everything from My Bloody Valentine to A-ha, and one Ramones cover.
