Astronauts – Skydive
Label: Lo Recordings
Release Date: 2nd June 2014
Lo Recordings are pleased to announce ‘Skydive’, the debut single from Astronauts, the new project from Dan Carney, previously of East London alt-folkers Dark Captain.
Taken from the forthcoming debut Astronauts album ‘Hollow Ponds’, ‘Skydive’ is a cascading mish-mash of creaking acoustic guitar, bleeps, electronic beats, and breathy vocal harmonies, which tell a tale of escape from constraint and freedom to fly unchecked through the air.
Lush, propulsive, gently psychedelic and slightly menacing, albeit with a euphoric, poppy pay-off, the song is lent a pleasingly rustic sheen by a cello cameo from Nicole Robson (Bat For Lashes, The Monroe Transfer).
‘Skydive’ is backed with two remixes. The first of these is a gargantuan psych-step reworking from East London electronic duo RocketNumberNine, fresh from ‘Blank Project’, their acclaimed collaborative album with Neneh Cherry.
Bedroom blip urchin Bit Cloudy also contributes a stuttering, fluttering re-imagining that takes the song into similarly unexplored kraut/psych territories.
‘Skydive’ is the sound of a summer day gone wrong, then right, then wrong, then right again. We like it very much, and we hope you do too.
